Safety Inspection [Nov. 30th, 2007|04:26 pm]
University of Utah

Does anyone know of any safety/emissions inspection places who look the other way about tinting? I've had my car since 2003 and it's passed safety every time, but when I went today, they said my tinting was too dark and that I'd have to scrape it off. I'd really like to avoid this if possible, so any suggestions would be welcome :D.

Prospective Student... [Oct. 28th, 2007|12:21 pm]
University of Utah

[Current Music |Matt & Kim - Lightspeed]

Hi everybody! I'm sure you've heard these questions a million times before, so sorry if it sounds repetitive.

Anyways, I'm Mallory. I'm 19, and this year I'm a sophomore at Humboldt State University in Northern California. Last year I was at University of Alaska Fairbanks, where I was born and raised. I'm on the National Student Exchange program, and I thought I was going to end up transferring here to HSU but I have since gotten here and thought more about majors I have since realized that that is not going to be the case, heh. I want to major in speech hearing sciences/communication sciences and disorders, and that is definitely not offered here. So I started looking at my options for schools that participate in the Western Undergraduate Exchange program and have the major i'm looking for and University of Utah was one of them!

So anyways I have a few questions.

What is Salt Lake City like? Weather wise, things to do wise, Etc.
Bars and clubs aren't a huge deal to me, as I'm not 21 and I'm not so much into that scene anyways. I love going to concerts (local and otherwise) and movies..And weather wise I'm up for snow and cold, how cold does it normally get there?

What are the students like? How is the on campus housing? I've lived in dorms this year and last year, and would be up for campus housing again provided there are apartment style dorms..I'm over typical dorm living, heh. Is it hard to find an apartment, is rent expensive, etc etc.

What are the academics like? Small classes, huge lecture style? last year I had all small classes and this year all my classes are 50+ lectures, and it sucks.

I know that was a really vague short list of questions, but I think really what I'm looking for is just some thoughts about Salt Lake City, the campus and everything. I've never been to Utah, I'm not mormon (or religious at all) and I'm kind of a small town girl. Any thoughts are appreciated!

Thanks in advance.

Bus passes [Jun. 27th, 2007|09:53 am]
University of Utah

[Current Location |EMCB]

I can't help but notice on the new UTA fares listing that there's now a price listed for student monthly passes, though Commuter Services still lists the pass as free. I've been getting good use out of my free one, but I'm realizing I'm not sure why it's free - is that provided by UTA, or the U? Anyone here know anything useful about the situation?

(Might be double-posted after a database hiccup... not sure the first went through)

Filler class? [Jun. 26th, 2007|11:22 am]
University of Utah

Hey, can anyone recommend an easy 2-3 hour class to fill in hours so my husband can get max financial aid/continue deferrments? He works more than full time and we have a bunch of kids, so seriously, not time intensive. I've looked at exercise classes, and they still require you to be there like 5 days a week during times that my husband is at work....

I'm at a loss. Any help would be great, thanks!

Summer apartment wanted [Jun. 15th, 2007|07:09 pm]
University of Utah
We're a couple looking for a place to live through the months of July, August, and possibly September. Something in the Sugarhouse or Avenue areas would be particularly good. Furnished would be great, but we can work with unfurnished. If anyone has a summer sublet, please let us know! Thank you! :)

Admissions decisions? [Mar. 5th, 2007|05:41 pm]
University of Utah

[Current Music |post blue; placebo]

I'm hoping someone out there who's in the U's grad school (preferably the MSW program) can help me out a bit here.

Basically, I got all of my stuff done for both the general grad school app as well as the MSW app and submitted both before their respective deadlines. However, two of my recommendation-letter-writers were slow as hell in writing the damned things, but the Social Work department was really cool and kept in touch with me via email to let me know if they had received a letter from such-and-such and what was missing. Then my MAT scores, which I had taken in late September, had not shown up by early December - when the deadline for the MSW program in November 1. Again, the department was really cool and let me know they were missing, and even got in on a conference call with me and the woman from Harcourt (the company that administers the MAT) in order to track down where exactly my scores went. Then in late January I took the GRE and had my scores sent. Why all the tests? you may ask. My GPA was not exactly what they were looking for, so I needed to take the MAT. And I figured that since the 2 other MSW programs I applied for require GRE scores, I might as well send a copy to the U as well.

Bottom line... I'm wondering if anyone can tell me, from their experience, what kind of turnaround time I should be looking at to hear an admissions decision? Granted, the things that had to come from outside sources (the test scores, letters of recommendation from people who swore they'd done them but actually hadn't) got in a bit late, but the person in the SW department said they wouldn't toss my app and that they'd hang onto it until everything came in. I'm pretty positive everything's in by now... so does anyone have any ideas on how long I might have until I hear something? The U is my first choice and I am on pins and needles to hear from them.

If it helps at all, I am from Connecticut, so I realize mail coming from Utah might take a bit. But if anyone can give me some info on how long their decision turnaround time was - to the Grad School in general, to their specific program, or especially to the MSW program - I would very much appreciate it!
